A Story of Success!
Canyon Creek Candle Company was created on a wing and prayer by two clueless and financially challenged women. For years, I had a strong interest in candle making. My desire led to research. I purchased books and surfed the Internet for information. I also investigated the strength of scent of other candle companies. But that is as far as it ever went. The intrusions of daily life soon took over and my ideas were put on the back burner, until one day in 2002.
I was unpacking a candle order for my retail gift store. To my dismay, some of the candles were broken and some were even missing. In that moment of frustration, I knew I could do a better job, provide a better service, and market a superior product with a stronger scent. Canyon Creek Candle Company came into being.
I decided to bring in a partner. Based on the research I had already done, I knew that 95% of consumers desired a stronger smelling candle. Armed with this knowledge, my partner and I realized that we could beat out the competition by simply producing a more fragrant, stronger smelling candle. We each started with a $1000 and I had to lend my partner her share. Yes indeed, we were definitely financially challenged!
In March of 2004, I purchased my partner’s shares of the company. I love to tell the story of how Canyon Creek Candles was “created by two financially challenged women” who, in their “clueless-ness” about finances, managed to make a go of it. It also reminds me of how blessed I am and how far I have come.
Today, I own and operate a company that can proudly boast that our candles are triple-scented, hand-poured, individually inspected, and clean burning. We have also expanded our product line to include high quality, handmade soap. We carry over 60 scents on our shelves. We have a manufacturing plant, and we operate a gift shop located in beautiful, rural Eastern Oregon in the city of John Day. Our facilities are open for tours. Not bad for someone who was “clueless!”
